Dear SKETCH Community,
It is with a heavy heart that we share an update on the significant financial challenges facing SKETCH Working Arts.
In April, we reported the suspension of summer programming in an effort to address the financial issues facing SKETCH. A small working committee including Board and staff members was created to review our financial management processes, opportunities and threats, as well as historical organisational decisions in an effort to realign our financial situation.
Our review highlighted several systemic issues including: inefficiencies in our financial systems that have persisted over years resulting in poor financial information and lack of financial oversight; inadequate planning during critical decisions, such as the purchase of a multi-million dollar space; and insufficient planning around the repayment of investors.
The Board fully acknowledges our responsibility to address these financial challenges. As part of our efforts to navigate this crisis, we have carefully explored multiple options and financial scenarios. We are now considering a restructuring of SKETCH Working Arts that would allow us to continue operating at a reduced capacity while we work diligently to stabilise our finances. We are committed to doing everything in our power to preserve the core mission of SKETCH and to continue serving our community, albeit on a smaller scale.
In July, all staff were released from their roles, with only the Executive Director and Financial Manager continuing to report to the Board. This decision was not taken lightly: we want to express our deepest gratitude to our staff, who have been the heart and soul of this organisation. We understand the profound impact termination has had on them, and we have taken steps to provide support during this difficult transition. This includes assistance with navigating unemployment benefits, providing job references and working diligently to get entitled termination payments paid out. We are committed to offering continued resources to help them as they move forward.
Throughout our mission has remained at the forefront of our minds. SKETCH Working Arts was founded on the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to engage with the arts, and we remain deeply committed to this mission. We are prioritising keeping the space accessible to our community and seeking out new partnerships and funding sources to ensure that, even in these challenging times, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of marginalised youth.
We ask for your understanding and support as we navigate these uncharted waters. We are grateful to those who have reached out with their questions, concerns and affirmations of support. With the continued support of our community, we can emerge from this crisis stronger and more focused on our mission than ever before.
In the coming weeks, we will continue to be transparent in our communications with the community. Thank you for your support and for your continued belief in the work we do.
Sincerely,
Board of Directors
